In 2012 the swim was renamed  in  the memory of Erik Mather who died from melanoma on 26 September 2011. He was 45 years old.

We are also very pleased to announce that the Melanoma Institute Australia has recognised the significant contribution that the event and the BBC community make to its research program, by establishing the Erik Mather PhD Scholarship for melanoma research. All donations raised by the event will directly fund the new Erik Mather PhD Scholarship program..

Any life lost to melanoma is one too many.

This year we have raised $43,928
